It develops as a child internalizes the moral teachings and expectations of parents, caregivers, and society. The superego strives for perfection and imposes guilt and shame when the ego's actions or desires conflict with its moral standards. It serves as the conscience, guiding individuals towards socially acceptable behavior and morality.
